At only 13, Faidha is a decorator, a makeup artiste and a mini-manager. The Form One student at Mziga Secondary School has learned all these from her mother.
Since she was in Grade Three, she watched keenly, what her mother-who is a nurse and an entrepreneur-did and is following closely in her footsteps.
“When I was a child, I often followed my mother to her salon where she did bridal makeup and other things,” said Faidha.
“With time, I learned and started doing makeup, manicure and hair, gradually, I became a pro.”
The very first skill she perfected was doing toe nails. “I washed them well, did some massage and applied nail polish.”
“I then learned how to do nail art and impressed clients with different flower decorations,” she said. “I am very comfortable doing nails for my customers who are mainly women. They like what I do, which makes me really proud of myself.”
Faidha is also good at hair. She can wash, set and even style. Apart from her skills in beauty and fashion, Faidha sometimes runs the show when her mother is away.
“I’m also a decorator. These days couples are keen on coordinating their theme colours, so I have to make sure that our customers are happy,” she said.
At some point, she says her mother went upcountry and left her and her brother in charge. “When a tender came, we bought flowers and set the place ready for a wedding reception party.”
Even though it was not easy, her mother’s workers were very supportive and they pulled off a great show, she tells Young Citizen.
Time management is very important to Faidha because in a business like theirs, everything needs to be perfect to attract more customers, she says.
“When you are good at what you do, you cannot go without a job.” In the future, Faidha hopes to be many things: a fashion model running a modelling agency, an entrepreneur and a doctor.
